What is a Headache and How Can You Treat It?

The Earth and Nature have many naturally occurring plants which are in medicines and home treatments. Many of the ingredients needed to help you heal from common ailments are found in nature and quite possibly your own backyard. For more complex health issues, it is recommended to seek out the advice and treatment of a physician.
In this article, we will discuss natural remedies that you can apply to a widespread ailment known as a headache.

What is a Headache?

The Mayo Clinic defines a headache as, "Pain in any region of the head. Headaches may occur on one or both sides of the head, be isolated to a certain location, radiate across the head from one point, or have a vise-like quality."

What Can You do if You Have a Headache?

First of all, a headache can be a sign that you are dehydrated. I suggest drinking at least eight ounces of cold water and waiting for about 15 - 30 minutes to see if your headache dissipates at all.
If it doesn’t go away, it could be a sign that you didn’t sleep well the night before, so you might want to take some time and relax for a little bit. Perhaps a nap is needed to recharge your energy and brain? I suggest taking a short nap, no longer than an hour to help alleviate your headache.
Headaches can often be a symptom of other issues within your body, such as inflammation or fever. Having a thermometer on hand, allows you to check your body temperature and determine if you are running a fever. Even a low-grade fever can cause mild symptoms such as a headache or chills, catching these symptoms early can prevent the symptoms from worsening. In the case of a fever, taking an over the counter fever reducer should help lower the fever and lessen the pain of the headache.

Stress or anxiety cause some headaches. If you don't take prescription medicine to treat anxiety, then I recommend a calming tea, perhaps something with chamomile or lavender, and if you prefer your tea to be sweet, use a natural sweetener such as honey instead of sugar.
Other headaches such as migraines require additional help. Once you've received a diagnosis of recurrent migraines, your doctor will most likely prescribe you medicines specifically for migraines. It is recommended to advise your doctor of any over the counter, natural remedies or holistic treatments that you may have tested in the treatment of your headaches.

Mental tension causes some other headaches. For those I would recommend, trying out some meditation and breathing exercises before indulging in some sweet tea, smoothie or snack of your choice. Sometimes, a light rubbing of the temples helps to relieve the tension in the brain, and one trick that also seems to work is to let your eyes rest for a couple of minutes. My favorite method is massaging the pressure points in my hands, specifically the area between the thumb and forefinger. I've found this remedy to relieve the pressure of a headache immediately.

Sometimes your headache can be a sign of a sinus infection, ear infection, or dental infection. These are all very serious and without medical treatment can lead to severe injury or death
These types of infections can go directly to your bloodstream, and subsequently to your heart. It is critical that if you suffer from a headache for longer than 48 hours, that you seek medical treatment by a licensed physician.

"Yes, it is possible to die from complications with an infected tooth," Thomas Porter, a faculty member at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, told PolitiFact Florida. "Every year there are cases where the patient did not receive appropriate and timely treatment of an infected tooth. In most cases, the infected tooth starts as a localized site with pain and infection."

Headaches can be tricky; they can be caused by various things, from illness or stress to excessive eye strain from reading all the articles posted on Creative Unity Online.
